Electric utility and generation company Tata Power has received regulatory approval to deploy a centrally controlled battery storage system in Mumbai, India.

The Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA) announced on Sunday (22 September) that it would fast-track an additional 2,500MW of pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) projects being developed in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

The automotive component manufacturing unit of India’s Tata Group has supplied BESS units to an energy storage park under construction by Tata Power.

The Asian Development Bank is providing financing to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited towards a 10MWh pilot project in Delhi, India.

The need for energy storage solutions in India to enable huge renewable energy growth makes it a promising market, Tata Power has said, after its solar subsidiary was awarded the country’s largest solar-plus-storage project to date. 

Described as a project of ‘strategic importance’ for India’s entire energy sector, the country’s first grid-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage system officially went into service this week.

Indian Discom (distribution company) Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) and German government-owned entity GIZ have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work jointly on promoting rooftop solar, energy storage systems, EVs and smart grid initiatives.
