A panel of developers, operators, OEMs and consultants discussed the different government approaches in Europe to ensuring long-term deployment of energy storage with revenue and capex support schemes, at last month’s Energy Storage Summit EU 2025.
In some countries in Europe, grid-scale energy storage markets have emerged largely through merchant opportunities in ancillary services and energy trading, notably the UK/GB, Nordics and Germany. Countries in Southern and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) meanwhile are generally speaking a few years behind on deployments, and the markets are relying on government-led revenue and capex support schemes to get off the ground.

“In Germany, you have five times more volume trading you can do in the within-day electricity market than GB, which is the second deepest within-day market in Europe,” developer Bluefield’s Baiju Devani said, giving an idea as to why that is, and also why Germany was by-and-large agreed to be Europe’s most exciting market.
Bluefield was joined by executives from owner-operators Dais Energy and Ikigai Capital, consultancy Clean Horizon, the Polish Energy Storage Association (PESA) and lithium-ion OEM Envision Energy on the ‘What is the Right Way to Go About Procuring Long-Term Energy Storage in European Markets?’ on Day One of the two-day event.
You can watch the whole 40-minute discussion below, in which the speakers went through different examples of the government schemes to kickstart energy storage markets, including in Italy, Greece and Portugal.
